If you are planning on travelling distance to attractions, we would recommend that you contact the venues directly in advance to avoid disappointment.

If you, or any of your party have a new persistant cough, or develop a fever of 38C, we would instead advise you to use the NHS's dedicated website for professional advice.

Red House

Visit Red House where Charlotte Bronte found inspiration and you're back in the 1830s. In 'Spen Valley Stories', you can catch up with life in the more recent past through the eyes of the local people. Red House now looks very much as it would have done in Charlotte Bronte's time. Mary Taylor, daughter of the house in the early 19thC, was a close and lifelong friend of Charlotte, who stayed there often. Wander around this wool merchant's home with its mixture of original and reproduction furnishings. Each room brings you closer to the 1830s, from the elegant parlour to the stone-flagged kitchen with its Yorkshire Range and jelly moulds. Explore Charlotte Bronte's connection with the Spen Valley and her friendships with Mary Taylor and Ellen Nussey in 'The Secret's Out' exhibition in the barn. Move along to the 20thC and the new 'Spen Valley Stories' exhibition housed in the restored cartsheds. Find out what's changed (and what hasn't) in the valley over the last 100 years.
